Conventional wisdom has it that society has been taught to be accepting and kind to the people around them, kindness can vary among social groups due to different backgrounds, ethnicity, and learned prejudices. It can be trialing for someone experiencing hyper-diversity to be affable and work towards social justice for minority groups, while doing this, they in turn, express a sense of integrity. All throughout the book Outcast United written by Warren St. John, the author writes about and capitalises a few of Bethel College values such as diversity, community, and service. Starting with Lumas soccer teams, one can see that she and the players have built their own community. After she left her family in Jordan, she was lost and didn't have a feeling of belonging, which is essential to humans. The boys came to the United States not knowing anyone and found the team which acted as a family. In many instances the boys were left feeling alone. They often had little to no english speaking skills that hinder them in all aspects. The boys went to tutoring sessions that were required by Luma. They were able to form connections and learn how to communicate better with both the adults and the other adolescents, with the tutoring sessions. Before the new sheriff was about to accept his new job, he went around town in street clothes playing the part of a citizen of Clarkston. After doing so, he saw the unfair treatment that was being exerted by the police officers of Clarkston. When he began his job as sheriff he was sure to have a ride along with each deputy to be sure that they did not violate any of the rules. He ended up firing almost half of his law enforcement team due to violations to his system. Bethel college prices themselves on service. The college encourages their students to get out into the community and help people that are unable to help themselves. Bethel college strives for each student to express compassion for people that are in need. In the book Outcasts United, Luma expresses compassion from the very start of the novel. When her sister is talking about the way that she would make her and her cousins run, it was said to be “for their own good”. She did not do it to be mean to her family, she was compassionate enough to want to instill hard work. Without service, the novel would not be written. If Luma had kept her cafe, and never took the leap of faith to close it down, she would not be able to create the community that she has built with her soccer team. Without question, she had put her life on hold to serve the young men and their families. She was said to have helped out a player's family buy groceries when they were low on money so they did not have to go hungry. With the rules that she inforced for the boys to be able to play on her soccer team showed her compassion and dedication to the team. She did not have to be as tough on the boys as she did, but she wanted the best for them. Where the young refugee’s came from was usually a place of little to no structure. By giving the young men structure and rules it helped some of them grow into accountable,
