I am applying for a position in the Orientation Team (O-Team) for the Fall 2018 semester. My first-year student orientation was absolutely phenomenal and through the various events, I met new friends who I still talk to today as well as I learned a lot more about Trinity, its customs, and its regulations. I am highly interested in giving the upcoming first-years the same experience that the O-Team brought to me during my orientation. I have a strong belief that a phenomenal new student orientation week is essential for a first-year student. Coming to Trinity as a first-year is daunting perhaps of the limited friend circle and increased responsibilities. However, a successful NSO acts as a bridge from the problem to the solution. Furthermore, NSO eases the transition into a responsible adult by connecting and directing first-years to resources that can assist them along their years at Trinity. Diversity and inclusiveness are an important aspect of the NSO because every first-year or transfer student should know that they have a place in the Trinity community. Diversity to me is the ability for everyone to acknowledge the differences between people and view it as a strength, and a means of broadening perspectives, rather than a tool for differentiation. Furthermore, with a strong base of diversity, a sense of inclusiveness can be developed. To me, inclusiveness means to make a direct effort to bring in as many people into social groups or situations and encourage participation. Inclusiveness to me doesn’t mean you bring in more people from different backgrounds, because you have to, but rather because you want to. The way I would promote inclusiveness within the O-Team is by encouraging fellow leaders to talk to people and interact with people who are not similar in their background or intro-extrovert-ness.
