Mike Huckabee: Political Courage
Could one stand up for something one believes in so strongly to offer to serve jail time for someone else? Same sex marriage is a very contentious issue in America. Same sex marriage first became legal in North Carolina on October 10, 2014. Same sex marriage was ratified by a 5-4 vote, which means that same sex couples are now free to wed in North Carolina (“Gay Marriage”). Some were ecstatic with this Supreme Court ruling while others like Mike Huckabee were not. Huckabee stated, “This ruling is not about marriage equality, it’s about marriage redefinition. This irrational, unconstitutional rejection of the expressed will of the people in over 30 states will prove to be one of the court’s most disastrous decisions, and they have had many” (“Mike Huckabee”). He is not so concerned about same sex marriage being legal, but that marriage has been redefined. Huckabee stood up for Kim Davis when he generously offered to serve her jail time. Huckabee saw this issue as a “criminalization of Christianity” (“The Fight in Kentucky”).
