Globalization is defined as, “an accelerated set of processes involving flows that encompass ever-greater numbers of the world spaces and that lead to increasing integration and interconnectivity amount those spaces” (Ritzer, 2007, p. 1). This week’s activity allowed me to explore the movement of globalization for my chosen gadget - a pair of Nike running shoes. Wiley states that, “as our definition of globalization suggests, places are interconnected now in such complex ways that we need to think conceptually across bounded and defined spaces and envision the connections, or networks, between places” (Wiley, 2015, p. 44). Mapping the globalization of my Nike running shoes, helped me to do exactly that. By having a better understanding of how one product creates connections between so many different places, I am able to better …show more content…
Wiley mentions that, “information technology networks link some places more than others, helping to create the spatial unevenness of globalization as well as the uneven outcomes of globalization” (Wiley, 2015, p. 45). Generally, to individuals who are not educated on the topic, globalizations is accepted as a positive concept. Without adequate knowledge on the topic, it is hard to see that an unevenness does exist and some places do not interact as much as others. Places that have few resources are ultimately left out and cannot participate in globalization, creating a divide between places. With Nike footwear specifically, I noticed that there are only a few countries that are involved in the manufacturing of products and their components. This leaves many countries at a deficit and helps promote the unevenness of globalization. Creating my own map as well as viewing the owns made by the INA, makes it very easy to see the inequalities. Perhaps, we should be creating these maps for more of the products that we
