A Tormented Soul outlines former Steelers center Mike Webster. Webster played football in his youth and later realized the serious repercussions that his passion had on his health. Webster's choice to play football, unbeknownst to him at the time, would have serious impacts on his health and if he would have know the effects earlier, perhaps he would have made a different decision. I am reluctant to say this, but I think it was worth it. I know it is uncouth to reference an outside source, but I think it plays in very well to this topic. Recently on Real Time with Bill Maher he brought up the idea of recklessness in youth. He initially brought up the idea of football injury and how players look back on their days as players with their current ailments. He analogized this to the life of Sammy Davis Jr. Even though Sammy Davis Jr. didn't live a long life he lived a full one in the 65 years he did. It is unfair to ask questions like these because the answer ill always be filled with regret, but what would life be without the experiences that you had. Life is meant to be lived, not reflected upon. Webster's youth was filled with the very sport that he loved and unfortunately everything has its consequences. Webster lived recklessly in his youth and he paid the price, but what would be the cost of living his life safely. If Webster would have lived safely he would have never been able to play in the NFL, an irreplaceable experience. The joy that football gave to Webster probably outweighed any consequence that he could have foreseen. Would Webster have been better off withholding from football and living an unfulfilled life or did he life a life worth living for the 50 years? I think he achieved happiness by following his
