Leaders at all levels of the Army are faced with difficult decisions every day, decisions that can affect the lives of everyone around them. The thought processes used by individual leaders to make decisions can be as far reaching as their imagination; however, it is every leader’s responsibility to make these decisions using the tenants of mission command. Mission command is not an easy skill to master, however great leaders understand it and the proper use of it when planning a mission. What is AAOP? AAOP stands for America’s Army our Profession. AAOP was made to inspire soldiers and civilians to recommit themselves to a culture of service and to follow the Army ethic and culture. They’re five characteristic’s to the Army profession and they are, trust, commitment to effective and ethical stewardship of the Army profession and to strengthen the Esprit de Corps. When we do something to please authority, we sometimes are not sure if it is for the right reasons. Every person on the earth has authority. However, the United States military branches are excellent examples to display authority. They have rankings such as corporal and colonel who interchange and are always moving up in the rankings. Sometimes what you are ordered to do is not always morally right.
A major issue is mutiny in the army. On January 6th, soldiers seized Bouake, the country’s second largest city. Solders also kidnapped the minister of defense while disputing over their pay. Some 8,000 soldiers were promised $19,300 each in bonuses, but none of the money was paid. A negotiator said that the soldiers were scared that the government would go back on their bonuses.
In this essay I will talk about the Army Leadership Code and its application, and about my personal ideal leadership model and how this fits in with the Army Leadership Code. There are many leadership models. The British Army uses the Army Leadership Code (SO2 Leadership, 2017). It uses the acronym LEADERS to make it easier to remember, each letter standing for a tenet of the code. The first is Lead by example.

Among these five characteristics; military expertise, honorable service, trust, esprit de corps, and stewardship of the profession, I believe that military expertise and stewardship of the profession are the two characteristics that make a leader excel in the presence of their peers. ADRP 1 defines military expertise as, “Military expertise is the design, generation, support, and ethical application of land power, primarily in unified land operations, and all supporting capabilities essential to accomplish the mission in defense of the American people”. In order to gain trust from your subordinates for them to follow your guidance, a leader must have military expertise. Without being an expert in your field, subordinates will not trust your guidance provided unto them. ADRP 1 defines Stewardship of the Profession as, “Stewardship is the responsibility of Army professionals to ensure the profession maintains its five essential characteristics now and into the future”.
A Commander sustains an ethical command climate in war by establishing clear intent and purpose for their organization, accentuated through his vision. The Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) and the Law of War are the military guidelines and penalties for soldiers to act accordingly. Distinctively, the majority of people know the difference between right and wrong. Command team (i.e. Commander and NCOs) are role models for the organization and set the example for their subordinates, which led to sustaining an ethical climate. Discipline organization exhibits high physical fitness, technical competence and successfully accomplish the mission.

Leaders must apply the Army Values when leading soldiers because of the fact that it builds trust and a bond. The same goes for the soldiers, in order for them both to work as an effective team and to get the mission done efficiently they both must live by these values. Once these values are integrated in a soldier’s lifestyle, it becomes too easy to work as a unit. An example on how loyalty and respect fits in a day to day to situation would be, a soldier witnessing a misunderstanding with his or her team leader and a higher ranking NCO, the soldier knows that his or her team leader is in the right. The soldier shows loyalty by standing by their team leader and shows respect by approaching both their team leader and the higher ranking NCO with tact to explain the situation from their understanding and what they witnessed.
The first step to creating this favorable environment, in my opinion, would be, to begin with, an "open-door policy." A leader can invite his soldiers to voice their views at any time and bring about any concerns that they may have while feeling completely comfortable to do so. A feeling of comradery within a team and a balance of powers, instead of overuse of harshness will ultimately lead to a better outcome in subordinate performance. Lastly, an essential step towards proper leadership deals with achievement. Achieving deals with the accomplishment of the goals in which the army has laid out, or that the individual sets for himself.
Military leadership is the process of influencing others to accomplish the mission by providing purpose, direction, and motivation. Another significant aspect of emphasized by the army is charisma. Therefore, army strategy to have a great leader is to choose people with high charisma since follower are always drawn to leaders with charisma. By having a high charisma they can command the follower easily. The basic task of a leader are: achieve the mission with zero fatality.
