The mills is the first union of woman working for money. The ages of these girls were unbelievable and the amount they worked was off the charts. Their free time was very little including for the kids that weren't even ten yet. Besides that they went on tons of strikes and had bad luck mostly all of them. One strike was for there pay to go back up and another was for the time that they worked to go down. These girls went through very tough times for there age and time period. Lowell Massachusetts, was founded in the 1820’s for manufacturing textiles. Lowell established new patterns of employment and urban development that were soon spread around England and other places. The factory was named after Francis Cabot Lowell. For many of the girls being employed was like freedom because they made their own money and lived by their rules. They were given broader educational opportunities by the factory and they were free from parental authority. The factory gave them many benefits but there were many disadvantages. They couldn't speak up for what they wanted or they would be fired. By the time it was 1840 there were more than 8000 textile workers known as mill girls or factory girls. Amelia a girl that visited the factory wrote that “the Mill girls worked 13 hours a day.” The girls who had homes generally work from eight to ten months in a year. “The Mill girls were all different ages, some weren't even ten years old.” (Robinson) Their ages varied from ten to twenty-five years old. The girls lives in the factory was not bad, actually it was made pleasant to them. The girls were trained by the older female mill girls on how to dress, conduct themselves in public, and how to speak properly. The workers were all girls that worked for a textile
