In the fan favorite 1932 film White Zombie, written by Garnett Weston, he explores the idea of mind control throughout the movie to show his control, power, and fear. Lengendre, played by actor Bela Lugosi is a voodoo master who was hired by Beaumont, the owner of a Haitian plantation, to control the mind of Madeleine; the young girl from New York who is preparing to marry her fiancé Neil. Legnedre uses a mind control zombie potion on her to get her to run away with Beaumont, and he also uses mind control to make the zombies on his plantation mill servants. They do everything that he orders them to do. The mind control used in the movie is a metaphor for mind control during the 1930’s. Mind control was a huge cultural fear of the 1930’s because of communism, there were fears that family loses cultural significance do to government authority and that you cannot make decisions for yourself losing individuality. It is still a fear for today because transfers to our contemporary moment and manifest in fears about losing control of ourselves. A big fear from mind control through communism was the fear of your family losing its cultural significance through government authority. America is all about being an individual and living the way you want to live even with that being the case in America we still have our minds controlled through music, television, and social media. Those things tell us what is in and what we should do, what is considered pretty and what is considered ugly, not letting people create their own ideas and conceptions of things. We stress the importance of being yourself and being original so much, so that we don’t have to have that fear of brain washing or mind control even though that is what the media
