How well do college students cope with stress, and do they cope in a healthy way? One healthy skill students can utilize to manage their stress and anxiety is, mindfulness meditation.

“Mindfulness meditation techniques enhance self-awareness, increases emotional, and psychological well-being, to help students with managing academic stressors (Birnbaum, 2008).” While having to perform in the high stress environment of academia, college students often experience significant physical, psychological, and emotional stress. There is a huge emphasis in academia to maintain a high grade point average. Encouragement of this comes from not only, teachers, counselors, and administrators, but also from other students as well as parents. This is a major source of stress and anxiety amongst students. Being “tied to a GPA” is a common saying amongst students. Furthermore, students with scholarships have an added source of pressure; due to the GPA requirements and standards that have to be maintained in order to receive these scholarships. This added component to an already overwhelmed student, with no coping skills, could prove to be a tipping point for their educational
