One of the most important questions in the concept of minimum wage is who does it affect? If one really digs deep into the demographics of minimum wage, realizes who is affected by it the most, and what it has done to help people, it is easy to come to the conclusion that minimum wage is justified. To be able build a solid profile for the average person on minimum wage, we have to look at a few statistics. First off, 50% of minimum wage workers are between the ages of sixteen and twenty-five, the other half being all other ages. It is easy to determine that a large percent of minimum wage workers are young.
This poses the question: “Is the current minimum wage a livable wage?” The answer, unfortunately, comes back negative. The current federal minimum wage, at $7.25, is worth nearly 38 percent less compared to 1968 when the federal minimum wage was valued at its highest ($11.72 in 2016 dollars). Given the facts, it is justifiable to raise the federal minimum wage as it would amount to a more livable wage, stimulate the economy, and provide better circumstances for workers of color and women.
One of the main reasons is that if the the minimum wage is increased, employers will have no reason to keep employees. As stated, “ Suppose we increased the minimum wage to $300 per hour. Do you really think that most of us would keep our jobs? Of course not-there would be no incentive for employers to retain us” (Source B). A key component in this argument is that if minimum wage was increased, employers would automate many jobs that workers have.
The first problem with raising minimum wage is inflation. Inflation is when prices rise because of the minimum wage rising. Setting the minimum wage to $15 an hour, which is what most people are wanting, businesses payroll would go up a lot. Taxes would go up if minimum wage went up because the government would need more money to pay for other jobs.
The main issue with raising the minimum wage is, it actually has very little effect on reducing poverty. This is because the majority of minimum wage workers are part-time, young, still in school, and because very few people earn minimum wage. With the minimum wage being intended to help people with minimum skills, its purpose was not to help a person raise a family of 4. Since the majority of minimum wage workers are teenagers, raising the minimum wage to reduce poverty would have very little effects since most below poverty level are not “head of household” workers (Fuller). Out of the 75.3 million workers that are paid hourly, only 4.7% were paid in minimum wage and of those minimum wage workers, 59.4% are between the ages of 16 and 24 (Patton).
This is why I think that raising the minimum wage is a bad thing. To start off with raising the minimum wage will hurt businesses. A study done by the Congressional Budget Office shows, “A minimum wage increase from $7.25 to $10.10 would result in a loss of 500,000 jobs.” A statement said by Jamie Richardson, MBA, and Vice President of the fast food chain White Castle said, “The company would be forced to close almost half its stores and let go thousands of workers if the federal minimum wage were raised to $15.” Both these studies show that increasing the minimum wage would decrease the amount of jobs that there are for people everywhere.
