Within the field of discourse analysis, the study of different genres has been approached from a number of linguistic perspectives, and we will follow a functional view in this paper for the study of the subgenre of online advertisements. Functional approaches to language have a long-standing tradition in British scholarship (Firth, 1957 ; Halliday, 2004). The importance of the context, the participants in the communicative event, and the field of discourse are all aspects of language variation which highlight the social function of language as the dominant feature of human communication. Because of this harsh treatment she becomes and awfully unhappy and unfulfilled person. As she experienced post-partum depression, which in today’s society would be something easily treated with medication back then it was misunderstood and was simply prescribed "rest" as a way of getting better. Her husband being a doctor is expected to know best and the wife having no better option agrees to comply with her husband’s suggestions. Just as her rest period is about to begin the husband decides to rent a "colonial mansion" in order for her to have a “faster” recovery and just as the wife starts asking questions about the house, he simply laughs at her.
They didn’t know what to do when they found out that she was pregnant; they were young, they didn’t have any money, they were scared, they didn’t want to tell anybody, they didn’t know what to do, and the only option that they could see was to terminate the pregnancy. So that’s what they decided to do… they went to a clinic, they had the procedure done, and at first they felt relieved that all their problems had gone away. But then something happened that they did not expect… and that’s over the next few weeks, which turned into a few months, they began to feel an intense sadness… and a pain and an agony and a guilt that wouldn’t go away. They didn’t know what to do, so they finally went to see a counselor; they said look — tell us what to do, we just don’t know, and the counselor made a suggestion. The counselor said here’s what you need to do — stop acting like you had a procedure, and act like you had a death in the family.”
There is a girl and both of her parents graduated from college, in fact, her dad is a doctor, while her mom is a teacher. The next dad in the story is an entrepreneur who is not even sure if he graduated high school. The other mom also graduated college and was a teacher, but gave it up 13 years ago to help the entrepreneur and stay home with her daughter. If someone took a look at the houses both families lived in they would not only assume the doctor lived in the house that the entrepreneur owns, but they would be so confident they would place a bet on it. Oh, how they would be mistaken.
