I selected the following quote: “The best teachers tell you where to look, but not what to see.” --Alexandra Trenfor (citation) After I read this, I thought of the film Matilda. More specifically, the characters Miss. Honey and Miss Trunchbull. In the movie Miss. Honey is known to be kindhearted and sweet but timid and is hiding a secret. Miss Honey is a kindergarten teacher, and all students feel safe around her. On the other hand, Miss Trunchbull, the school's principal, is the complete opposite. Many people would describe her as a monster that fills kids with terror. She is stern and runs a tight ship and clings to traditional teaching values. Matilda had an extreme passion for learning, something her family shamed her for. Both parents and brother would verbally abuse her, calling her an “Ignorant little twit.” As a result, Matilda would hide her books and read them in secret. She was eager to start school to meet kids like her, plus she had time to get away from her family. Matilda’s first impression of Miss Trunchbull was her swinging a girl by her braids and releasing her into the garden, similar to a hammer throw. Instantly she became mortified about what school might be like. Still feeling on edge, she headed to her classroom, where she met Miss Honey. She quickly found out that Miss Honey and Miss Trunchbull were exact opposites. Miss Honey made sure to introduce herself properly which made Matilda feel welcomed. It didn’t take long for Miss Honey to see that Matilda's intelligence was more advanced than the rest of the class. Miss Honey seemed almost intimidated by the five-year-old’s knowledge. Miss Honey even went to go meet Matilda's parents to hopefully work with them to reach Matilda's full potential. To her surprise they weren’t as pleasant as she thought they would be. Miss Trunchbull on the other hand gave Matilda a harder time, she once punished Matilda for outsmarting her by putting her in a locker filled with rusty nails known as “The Chokey”. When Matilda informed her parents about her principal they didn't seem to believe her, still thinking that it was Matilda's fault that she kept getting punished. This caused Matilda to continually talk to Miss Honey before, during, and after class. Matilda and Miss Honey's relationship grew to the point where Matilda would soon consider Miss Honey as more of a mother figure than her own mother. Miss Honey would talk about her own life and how she related to Matilda's love for education, this made Matilda feel better about herself. Miss Honey even invited Matilda over for tea in which she opened up about her past and revealed her secret in which Miss Trunchbull was actually Miss Honey's wicked aunt she grew up
