Students in our modern day classrooms face a very different range of issues compared to those students of around twenty years prior, the more time spent in analysing results and communicating with students and discovering what their biggest concerns are in their present lives during their schooling careers and post-school has made it clearer that our ideas of what skills and resources students need to develop and thrive has changed immensely. Academic ability is the largest cause of concern and has been picked by 18.2% of all students surveyed, this indicates that almost a fifth of the students who took part in the survey are finding school difficult and feel as though their own ability level is preventing them from being able to accomplish goals both at school and in potential job opportunities (Mission Australia, 2015). This is indicative of the point of view that the current school learning environment does not meet the needs of a big group of students through not being supportive enough for individual student requirements or needs to the point where the students themselves see their own ability as a hurdle that they are concerned about …show more content…

In speaking with the teacher at the Box Hill Cricket Victoria campus, it became apparent that the sorts of students that were being taught there were had predominantly not enjoyed their time in the mainstream school system whether it be through lack of effort, being disenchanted with what they were learning, or academic ability playing a role and overall much preferred and suited this particular VCAL program. Roughly a quarter of this class had learning difficulties that would have made traditional VCE classes difficult if they weren’t going to be accommodated for, something that SEDA is able to provide for its students through extra assistance classes and meetings with students to keep track of their progress and general state of mind. Many of these students also were also able to begin seeing what life outside of their current educational environment was going to be like and were starting to grasp ideas for what fields they wanted to go in as they were encouraged to follow goals and set realistic
