At my part-time job with the Mississippi Business Journal (MBJ) it is imperative for us to work together as a team in order to get things accomplished. MBJ is a local outlet that promotes local business activities. This newspaper is distributed on a weekly basis and consists of eleven employees and four units. Those units are Advertising, Editorial, Circulation and Production. It is important that these units collectively work together to make the Mississippi Business Journal function properly. The publishing company of the Mississippi Business Journal is located in Tupelo, Ms. However the Mississippi Business Journal functions self-sufficiently and makes business decisions without having to confer with the publishing company. This is an enormous feat for the Mississippi Business Journal considering that the company has only eleven employees. This requires a lot of teamwork in order for the company to run smoothly. As defined by Leigh Thompson, “work teams are an interdependent collection of individuals who share responsibility for specific outcomes for their organization.” (Thompson, 2014) Common Goal Collectively, the different departments of the Mississippi Business Journal work to accomplish a common goal. Boundaries exist for each department. By doing this, it prevents any comments regarding playing favoritism to customers that spend advertising dollars with the newspaper, so I respect the boundaries of the editorial department, and if there is something I feel should be considered I take it through the proper channels of the team. Respect for each team member’s idea is also important in working in teams at the MBJ. If the idea is what we consider “far fetch”, we will mostly likely discuss it as a team and weigh the pros and cons before a decision is made to abandon the idea.
