Jefferson decided to try and buy New Orleans. Why did he want to buy it? He wanted to be sure that American farmers would always be able to ship their goods through the port. Jefferson sent Robert Livingston and James Monroe to buy New Orleans and to buy West Florida from Napoleon. The president said they could offer as much as $10 million.
At the time, the United States only inhibited from the edge of the Mississippi River to the Appalachian Mountains. The purchase of the Louisiana territory expanded USA’s land two times its original size. With the purchase of the territory, came the free reign over the Mississippi River, which played a major role in economics and agriculture. The U.S. sailors and merchants relied on the Mississippi River for transportation of their goods. It was inexpensive, safer, and all together more convenient.
The Pinckney Treaty of 1796, was an event to be happy about. This allowed merchants in America to warehouse their merchandises in New Orleans. This was called “right of deposit”. This arrangement opened the Mississippi River and allowed for trading from Spain. Then with the warehousing in New Orleans this allowed for merchants ease for trading from Pennsylvania to Spain.
The Battle of New Orleans was a monumentous moment in the evolution of New Orleans. The importance of the Battle of New Orleans was to make sure Britain was not able to conquer New Orleans because they would take control of the Mississippi River and essentially control sea commerce. The events that occurred from 1763-1829 resulted in New Orleans being governed under different regimes to ensure safety from Britain. There are two primary sources that will be discussed in order to help define the time period I have chosen. The first primary source is the Treaty of Paris in 1763.
In 1803, The United States of America bought the Louisiana Purchase from France. Because of this purchase, the United States doubled the size of the nation. The territory stretched from the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi River and from the Canadian Border to the Gulf of Mexico. This purchase is considered one of Thomas Jefferson’s greatest achievements as president. Jefferson was excited to learn what this new land held.

If I can understand what and why the rivers are doing what they are doing then I can understand how the river changes, what causes the river to change, and why the river changes. I want to see if the amount and size of sediment the river is transporting has an effect on what type of river is formed. I also want to determine if the substrate the river is flowing over has an effect on what type of river is formed, and if it has an effect on how fast the river meanders.
