When African Americans heard they were technically allowed to be free now, according to the Emancipation Proclamation, African Americans wanted to fight on the side that would allow them to remain free even after the war ends. At the start of the war, they were not allowed to take part in the army and fight in fear that some states, like Missouri, would quickly transition over to the Confederacy's side. At this same time, Lincoln realized that once the war was over there was no possible way that slavery could or should continue and begun to believe the phrase Frederick Douglas about how slavery was “the source and center of this gigantic rebellion.”
Lexie Lee Trahan English 8 22 March 2017 From 1861-1865, the American Civil War began. It consisted of two big parts the North and the South. The North and the South had very many strengths and weaknesses during the Civil War. The civil war begun by the disagreements of how one side (The South) wanted to expand slavery.
In the years leading up to the Civil War, there were four main events regarding the extension of slavery in the United States. The Missouri Compromise, The Kansas-Nebraska Act, The Dred Scott Decision, and The Lincoln-Douglas Debate were all major events that may have provided a temporary solution to the problem regarding slavery, however also failed to stop the momentum towards conflict. First and foremost, the Missouri Compromise of 1819 was the first spark in the events leading to the Civil War. This major event split up the country immediately, as the compromise led to an imbalance of power between slave and free states. Prior to the Missouri Compromise, there was an equal balance of slave states and free states.

Before the Civil War broke out in 1861, there were an estimated almost four million slaves in the United States, and just under 500,000 free African Americans. Combined they comprised about 14 percent of the country’s population. Of these 4.5 million, some 180,000 African Americans served in 163 units for the Union army as well as surely thousands more in the Navy. However, while only one percent of all African Americans in the United States resided in the North, slaves and freedmen only began serving the Confederate Army in 1865, and did so to a far lesser degree than in the North. It took a clear and direct urging from the beloved General Robert E. Lee to convince the Confederate Congress to begin enlisting black soldiers.
In the North, African Americans were free but in the South, the slaves were a big percentage of the population. Despite the south having a population of 9 million total, 4 million consisted of just slaves (Civil War Facts, pg 2). Even though the war was being fought for slavery, President Lincoln didn’t allow African Americans to fight. Two years in the war Lincoln changed his mind about black soldiers. One example of black soldiers is the 54th Massachusetts.
Throughout the early years of the war, many Northerners regarded the Civil War to be a “white man’s war”, but in March of 1863, several months after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, the North formed African American regiments. The Civil War was transitioning from a war solely about the preservation of the Union to one also concerning the Emancipation of the slaves. In May of 1863 the Department established the Bureau of Colored Troops. The black soldiers faced discrimination and there was also segregation. There were northerners who resisted the war effort. The north also went through an economic depression, and enraged white people rioted against African Americans, who they accused of stealing their jobs. The Civil War was an ugly fight between the South, which was fighting to keep slavery, and the North, which was fighting for African American's freedom and to eradicate slavery so the South can stay with the Union. During the Civil War both the North and the South needed the help of African American slaves, because both did not have enough people working on their sides. Both sides' armies had very different views on where the African Americans should be placed for their military service. One way we clearly can see this is through the recruitment posters from both sides. A Confederate recruitment poster shows that the South viewed African Americans as race who aren't their own person, and only are able to do labor for the army.
The Civil War is one of the most well-known wars in American history, and there has been some controversy among historians regarding certain aspects as well, including whether the Civil War was a total war. When looking at how all of the events played out in the Civil War, it was not a total war but looked as though it was because it represented a shift toward more modern war tactics and weapons for the United States. The more modern weapons led to more destruction in America, while the fighting led to more modern war tactics being implemented. Additionally, there were never proper moves toward totality on the American government’s side. One reason the Civil War seemed to be a total war was the use of more modern weapons.
