Before I can go into detail about the three steps of mitosis that are presented in the question I must first summarize mitosis. Mitosis is actually a process of nuclear division that is nicely broken up into five stages. The stages are prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. Mitosis conserves the chromosome number by assigning replicated chromosomes equally to each of the daughter nuclei. Mitosis takes place in eukaryotic cells (Campbell, pg. G-22).

Choice A is just anaphase which is actually one of the correct answers. But in this situation we are looking for all of the possible answers so choice A is incorrect. I will not be explaining anaphase just yet because I would prefer to explain both correct answers at the …show more content…

Telophase is incorrect and actually has the nuclear membrane present during its process. Telophase has two daughter nuclei that will form in the cell. The nuclear envelope will arise from the fragments of the parent cells nuclear envelope and other portions of the endomembrane system. These fragments came to be in a pervious step of mitosis. It is in the telophase that the nucleoli will reappear. The chromosomes will become less condensed in this phase of mitosis. Telophase is also the completion of one nucleus dividing into two genetically identical nuclei (Campbell, pg.237). For these reasons we can take choice B out of the …show more content…

During metaphase the chromosomes will be at opposite poles of the cell. This is called them arriving at the metaphase plate. The metaphase plate is a plane that is an equivalent distance between the spindles poles. The chromosomes are then attached to kinetochore microtubules coming from the opposite end (Campbell, pg.237). From this brief description we can tell that the nuclear membrane is not present during metaphase further solidifying that choice C is correct.

Choice D is incorrect because telophase has the nuclear membrane present while metaphase doesn’t. For a more accurate reasoning please see my information above. So there is no doubt this choice is
