“The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson is a short story that paints an illustration of either a post-civilization society or a pre-civilized society depending on your interpretation of the situation. Regardless though, the civilization that is described throughout the short story is one that would not be considered within the norm when discussing societies in a modern setting. The antithetical juxtaposition of the characters from the beginning of the story to the final stanzas offer an example of conforming to social norms which include the murder of innocent members of the civilization. Throughout the story, Jackson uses foreshadow and biblical allusions to build suspense for the unexpected. Jackson begins by describing what seems to be a normal sunny day at the end of June in a small town in New England where three hundred people gathered in suspense for the upcoming lottery.
In the short story “The lottery” many of the villagers showed a great emotion towards the lottery some of it is being happy or negative. For the most part, it was a more negative emotion or eery rather than villagers being happy about it. The kids though had a more pleasant emotion showing that the kids almost had no idea what was really happening. Just read this quote from the story “ Bobby Martin ducked under his mother’s grasping hand and ran, laughing, back to the pile of stones.” In this, quite the short story is expressing that the kids most likely do not really know what is happening and their mood at the time.

No one stood for her they just excepted it and moved on. This powerful story Show’s how people go with the crowed even if there are terrible actions happening.
People tend to have a difficult time standing up for what is right. Even if they know with all their heart it is right, it will be hard to go against everyone and stand up for their beliefs. In the story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson tells the story of a village who every year randomly selects one person to sacrifice in the event called the lottery. This is an accustomed event that the villagers do without fuss, but deep down they know it’s wrong. Jackson thoroughly critiques the human tendency to not expose the wrongdoings of people around them.

Upon reading this week's reading choice, "The Lottery", written by Shirley Jackson. I found this choice very entertaining. I instantly noticed that this short story's point of view was in third person. It takes place in a Rural Village in the Summer in or around 1948. This particular time period is the end of the Holocaust and of World War II, which took place in 1945.

My Reaction to “The Lottery” The author of “The Lottery” is Shirley Jackson, she wrote about people basically doing what other most of other people may be doing because of it being a tradition of some sort and even if the tradition seems dumb to them, they’ll still participate in it simply because they’ve been doing it since they were young. Shirley Jackson has witnessed it and participated in several things she didn’t want to take part in. Overall, the meaning of this book is that people tend not to speak out about things that they think or feel when it’s about something that they’ve been doing for years.
