Sophomores nowadays need to grasp how good writers use many good writing styles. The novel Unbroken uses multiple ways to hook the readers while giving a remarkable true story. While the book does show dark moments, students should understand that it's life and nothing will ever be perfect. The novel Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand, should be in the sophomore curriculum because the novel uses themes, historical context, and artistry.

We see the use of imagery when the announcer for the radio station is reporting the Olympic race (Hillenbrand 34). The imagery shown there is a great representation of how to show people what is happening without being there to witness it. Putting the picture in your mind of the Olympics, the kids running to get what they all have ever wanted: the gold medal. Another example of imagery is “A Dead Body Breathing” (Hillenbrand 185). This is a great example showing how Louie is alive and breathing but he should be dead. Seeing this is a good way to help sophomores learn how to use words to make a picture in the reader's mind. On the contrary, there are other times when you should use an actual image to help express your words. Hillenbrand did a good mix of both of these techniques. On (Hillenbrand 148) we see the image of the men in the raft floating, even though Hillenbrand has been talking about them in the boat, the picture gives a better representation of the guys and how they are living in the middle of the ocean. She shows another good example of using pictures to help illuminate the novel (Hillenbrand 297). This image clarifies how much weight the P.W. lost through the camps and shows how Louie looked when losing almost 100 pounds through the war. Using these methods together helps tie both of them together and helps make the novel better understood by a wider range of
