Caroline Miller, the author of “Video Games and ADHD”, uses imagery to establish credibility and trust in the author, which in turn convinces the reader to presume the author’s stance on the topic is correct. As an example, as an introduction to the article, Miller paints the idea of a “child, who finds it almost impossible to stay in their chair and focus on the lesson at school, can nonetheless sit in front of a video screen, transfixed, for hours” (Miller 2021). The quote above uses imagery to appeal to an emotional standpoint or pathos; by illustrating this elaborate scene of a child spellbound by a television, yet unable to concentrate on studies for mere minutes, the author sparks relatability and has an approachable demeanor. As an illustration, the article states that “Elementary school children who play video games more than two hours a day are 67 percent more likely than their peers who play less to have greater-than-average attention problems, according to the study, which appears in the journal Pediatrics” (Klein 2010). The aforementioned quote has two important aspects of a convincing argument: ethos and logos. It establishes these core aspects by stating a percentage, and then stating where that percentage came from; both of these appeal to the logical side of your brain, that one’s brain that enjoys facts and reasoning, building a convincing argument. In the article mentioned above, “Video Games and ADHD”, logos and ethos, while present, are not major players in the game of rhetoric. One could argue that to a wide majority of people, logos and ethos are more convincing than pathos; thus leading to the next statement, that Sarah Klein of “Study: Too Many Video Games May Sap Attention Span '' was the more convincing of the two articles. The use of numbers and statistics was more convincing than the use of imagery and credibility. Overall, while both articles managed to do a fantastic job of persuading the reader, “Study: Too Many Video Games May Sap Attention Span” is more
