The 1960’s African-American civil rights activists, Malcolm X or Martin Luther King set out to encourage others to join their revolution. They were able to accomplish much greater than they would ever alone. They had different outlooks and methods of how to out lash for the way blacks were being treated. Malcolm leaned towards violence as the only way for resolution, while MLK felt that it was essential to make all whites and blacks equal. Malcolm’s goal was to one day make blacks the superior race rather than whites. MLK wanted to achieve equality and abolish racism. MLK and Malcolm wanted a change for black men, wanted equality and felt religion would be a major contribution to the cause. Malcolm was a Muslim and he based most of his beliefs from his religion. He felt as if whites should be punished for the multiple years they put blacks through slavery, and for belittling blacks and treating them unequally. If necessary, he was for violence as a way to make a change and he wanted America to repent. One of his arguments was that the “white government was afraid to let her twenty-two million ex-slaves go back to our country” because he meditated it was best to separate the races and live apart (11). He didn’t want to see the races integrated because he thought it would be a nightmare. MLK on the other hand included his Christian beliefs but he was a minister after all. His argument was that a people of all races should come together as one. He expressed his dream of one day achieving no racism. In his speech, he proclaims “I have a dream that … this nation will rise up, live out the true meaning of its creed “We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal.” to express his vision to see all mankind come together as equals (4). Another incite into MLK was he wasn’t one to advertise violence. Even when whites would come up and hurt him, he wouldn’t lash out in violence.
