Have you ever hear about the “Model Minority” myth? Maybe you haven’t? Maybe you have but don’t fully comprehend it. An overall view is a groups that is successful academically, financially, and socially. Many people including yourself might think this is awesome to have as a group and how they are making a different, but it quite the opposite. As this myth is often used as a stereotype to Asian American it’s also problematic for several reason. The impact overall has affect Asian American experience by many negative way in there lives like in health to their mental state and what they are expected in the level of education. There are many people who think high of Asian American students to be smart or a genius. As this is one of the most common stereotypes in their life experience being Asian American, isn’t always true, but it’s based on a the “Model Minority” myth. One of the biggest negative impacted on them is the level of education, having them be expected of being smart successful in school, and to be good at math. “The myth hurt Asain Americans, a rapidly growing population in American schools. “In published “school report cards” mandates…They are Asian American but, at Cornell University, 13 of the 21 student suicide victims since 1996 have been Asian or Asian American. ”(Zhao,339) the amount of people who doesn’t know how impactful it is and causes such thoughts or attempts of suicide. This can happen a lot when they grow up because as a child theres no such thoughts but rather replace with like “I hate school”, “School is useless” or etc, as these young Asian American student feel it but don’t fully comprehend.
