“The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs and “What of this Goldfish Would You Wish?” by Egaret Keret are both exciting fictional short stories that engage the reader. There are many differences as well as similarities between the two stories. Overall, the two stores are more diverse. The differences lie in the areas of character traits and plot.
Even though “The Monkey’s Paw” and “What of this Goldfish Would You Wish?” have many similarities, evidence shows the two stories have less in common. Many of the differences ly within plot. In “What of this Goldfish Would You Wish?” Sergei shows many positive character traits throughout the story. Sergei proves that he cares about other people over himself, and is considerate of others feelings. Sergei proves he is kind by using one of his wishes to cure his girlfriend’s son. “The Monkey’s Paw” Mr. and Mrs. White show more negative positive traits than positive. Mr.White is selfish with his wishes and is inconsiderate for what others might want. Mr.White uses his first wish to ask for 200 pounds to pay off the rest of his house mortgage, which is only beneficial for him. Although the stories consist mostly of differences, there are also a few similarities. In both stories the characters get 3 wishes from personified objects. In “The Monkey’s Paw” Mr. and Mrs.White received a cursed monkey paw that allows 3 men 3 wishes. In “What of this Goldfish Would You Wish?” Sergei received a magical talking goldfish that granted him 3 wishes.
In spite of the similarities the stories are different in more ways than one. The stories are different through the plot and character traits. The stories contain many examples of different plots, along with completely different character traits. The two stories compared together are only similar in one way, while the differences are
