In his final entry, a farewell letter to Miss Kinnian and Dr. Strauss he states “If you ever reed this Miss Kinnian dont be sorry for me Im glad I got a second chanse to be smart becaus I lerned a lot of things that I never even new were in this world and Im grateful that I saw it all for a little bit {sic},” (Keyes 28). Even with all the agony that came with his experiment, from both the rejection of his friends and from his depressing loss of the knowledge he gained, Charlie thinks it was still worth it. Instead of being bitter he returns to the optimistic person in the beginning who believed he could turn smart if he worked hard enough. Charlie wasn’t spiteful to the scientists who performed the surgery or hostile to Miss Kinnian who recommended him for the surgery because of his optimism. He always wanted to be smart and he got his wish.
ALYA Look at yourself, become a playboy, but at the end still back to Chorina. You wasted your time. ALYA (CONT’D) Wasted the future. Din laughs.
But when Charlie got the surgery, he realized when his intelligence was wearing off, he got super depressed but he powered through the depression. One quote from the book that indicates depression is “please... please let me not forget how to read and write.” (keyes 25). Even though he is forgetting how to read and write and he is getting depressed, he powers through the depression. On the last page he says “im taking a cuple of books along and even if i cant reed them ill practise hard and maybe i wont forget every thing i learned.
The change in Charlie is undeniable when Charlie starts beating the mouse Algernon, and he knows that he “must be getting smart to beat a smart mouse like Algernon” (41). In addition to the reader’s ability to see Charlie’s progression, Charlie himself can see that he is getting smarter. This detail proves that Charlie has changed since the beginning of the story because just nine days after he complained that he was not getting smarter, he can see his own improvement. Later on, in Charlie’s arduous journey, he finds through his own research that his brain is going to regress to the point where he will no longer be able to function. Previously, he had pushed himself to learn as much as he could in a very short time period, causing his brain to retrograde at a rapid speed.
Its so obvious he would do anything to be smart. The only problem is that he didn't have the mental capacity to understand what the surgery would do. Charlie had a hard time with spelling simple words like write. So how could he understand what the surgery would do to him and how it would effect his life he didn’t know how to think about all the backlash for this decision. Charlie wasn't smart enough to understand what would happen to him after the
Being mentally challenging would be hard not for one person but also for the people that help help them with their everyday life. Other people who are not mentally challenging can never understand how hard it would to be mentally challenging or work with someone who is. In the novel, Flowers for Algernon, Daniel Keyes demonstrates that nothing is going to be perfect in this world and all there is to do is deal with it and make and live life to the fullest. He shows that changing Charlie 's intelligence was not really worth the cost of experimenting, time and effort put into this operation. It was not meant to be for Charlie to be a genius.
Before Charlies operation he was not able to express his feelings accurately, but Charlies temporary intelligence
Charlie can look back and learn from his memories from being smart. “I knew that this was only the beginning. I knew what she meant about levels because I’d seen them already.” (234) This quote connects to Charlie remembering his memories because he remembered the levels of being smart. Being smart is very important in life and someone his age should not be struggling.
Charlie gains intelligence like he always wanted, but only to have it be taken away in a time frame of a couple months. Charlie states that, “The hypothesis here proven may be described simply in the following terms: artificially increased intelligence deteriorates at a rate almost proportional to the quantity of the increase.” With realizing the cost of the surgery, he states, “Now that it’s definite, I don’t want it to happen.” Charlie experienced emotions such as anger, sadness, and even love with his intelligence. Now all this will be taken away; like taking away a favorite toy from a child.
INTRO I have done it. I have brought upon the death of another man! I have blood upon my hands. For that I feel I should have changed but desperation has replaced the sorrow I feel for my actions.
Although, if Charlie did not have the surgery, he would not have had the experience of becoming super smart. Charlie would agree with me that he did not feel happy with himself that he had the surgery. He decided that he wanted to leave New York because he was so embarrassed about pulling a “Charlie Gordon.” Charlie should not have had the surgery because, before the surgery, he had the motivation to become smart, and after the surgery, he became depressed and realized that the world plus the people in it are
I dont care if it herts.” He clearly does not fully grasp the implications of the surgery. Charlie only understands the operation may hurt, missing other risks like surgical complications. Failing to understand what the surgery will do to his brain, he only knows it will make him “smart”. He cannot comprehend what smart means, only wishing to be the same as others.
Yusuke’s body language slouches into a proper sitting position as the weight of Akira’s words weighs him down. All he could do is stare down at his feet in an ambivalence of what to say, there isn’t much to offer on his tongue and the more he waits for something genuine to come the more it fades. (-- removed HTML --) (-- removed HTML --) A discussion he doesn’t truly wish to acknowledge stings at the tip of Akira’s tongue, but Yusuke’s lack of response enkindles it.
Algernon’s dissection has only confirmed my startling predictions. I hoped for the progressive deterioration of my intelligence to be a temporary side effect, but now I see I can do nothing to prevent myself from regressing back to the old Charlie, and possibly even less. It is incredibly frustrating knowing I will not be able to stop this. Emotional instability and forgetfulness are beginning to plague me. Despite this, I cannot sit idly by, allowing myself to be consumed by this but at the same time, what can I do?
As Charlie starts to get more intelligent, his brain starts to develop ideas that he would have not known before. Charlie states, “I figured out a new way to set up the mixing machines in the bakery to speed up the production. Mr Donner never says he will save labor cost and increase profits. He gave me fifty dollars bonus and a ten dollar a week raise”(59). This evidence shows, how Charlie intelligence helps him to come up with a new way to use the machine.
