Battle of the Monsters (A discussion on the reason Beowulf fights the three monsters) There are many things that describe the times of the Anglo Saxons. This time period can be looked at as the Viking Era. With this title comes many new views and perspectives on life. The Vikings told oral tales and one of those is a story of a famous warrior named Beowulf. This warrior came from the land of the Geats. His hero acts start when there are rumors of a monster in the land of the Danes. Beowulf decides to fight this monster which led to many other as well. After defeating the first monster, everyone believed that this was the end. Little did they know, Grendel had a mom that was not going to let the death of her son go unnoticed. After she killed one of the kingdom’s best warrior’s Aeschere, the king Hrothgar was extremely troubled and called upon Beowulf to take her down. This task was extremely more difficult than the last as it was a big possibility that he could die from this battle. Beowulf knew that to have glory, one must be remembered when they are dead and that the challenge is to win this glory before death. He knows that he could have been killed, but he was not going to quit because everyone has to die, but one who wants glory must do something so that their name survives them. In the Beowulf packet, Beowulf spoke to Hrothgar after the death of Aeschere in lines 895-900, “Sorrow not, brave one! Better for man to avenge a friend than much to mourn. All men must die; let him who may win glory ere death. That guerdon is best for the noble man when his name survives him.” This shows that Beowulf clearly knew what glory was, and wanted to seek revenge on Grendel’s mother.
