Monte Cristo’s revenge plan for Fernand consists of ruining his reputation and causing his own wife and son to leave him, which results in his ultimate doom—suicide. Fernand’s initial offense against Dantes is that he is the one who delivers Danglars’ letter blaming Dantes of Bonapartist action since he is in love with Mercedes and thus hates and envies Dantes, who is Mercedes’ fiancée. Thus, unlike Caderousse, Fernand is one of the three main conspirators and further wrongs Dantes by marrying Mercedes after Dantes is imprisoned. Since Fernand’s success allows him to be consumed by pride, carrying an “excessively haughty” (352) persona, Monte Cristo directly attacks his pride by ruining his status. Furthermore, since Monte Cristo initially biasedly dislikes Albert since he is the son of Fernand and Mercedes, he decides to kill Albert when challenged to a duel, which will further harm Fernand by allowing him to lose his only son. However, this instance reveals that Monte Cristo’s plan is not perfect and that his sense of justice is incomplete. For, Monte Cristo does not foresee the conversation with Mercedes where she questions Monte Cristo’s sense of justice, since Albert himself has done nothing against him and urges him to rather seek vengeance on herself and Fernand, the ones who actually directly cause Monte Cristo’s agony.
