He creates this suspense by the use of the setting, foreshadowing, and Montresor’s character throughout the book. All fiction books use this method, but two novels that used it especially well are Dracula by Bram Stoker and Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. The character Montresor in Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Cask of Amontillado” suffers from Anti-social personality disorder. With several signs pointing towards this diagnosis is would be naive to suggest otherwise. One might argue that Montresors lack of impulsivity, suggests that he does not suffer from this disorder, but, because of the severity of the other symptoms, it more than balances out. These moods can vary from positive to negative. For example, “1984” by George Orwell and “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair both have an overall mood that is anxious. “The Cask of Amontillado" is a story of high revenge. The action in story follows by first-person narrator name Montresor, who announces from the beginning that someone named Fortunato has injured him repeatedly and he follows the action contininusoly. So he oath to take revenge upon Fortunato. This theme is evident in the first sentence, "the thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge”(Poe 208). As story continues, one evening during carnival occasion, a time when much happiness and celebration would be taking place.

Mood can affect one’s surroundings as well as how they act and handle the situation they are placed in. The feeling that the author demonstrates is anticipated to pull emotion from the reader.
