Connell skillfully applies mood throughout “The Most Dangerous Game” as he expands on the thought of mood by spreading it across the story. Connel describes how the mood changes when they get closer to the island, it turns gloomy and scary, it feels like you can see things staring at you. “Through the soundless night, Rainsford heard three gunshots off to the right” (Connell 1). What this quote shows to the reader is how you can feel how you're not alone on the island, like when he heard gunshots off to the right. How the quote builds suspense is that the General is cheating, but Rainsford is using his surroundings and skills. Connell puts it in to build suspense because you never know what can happen. Connell uses tone to show how quickly the character can change, this makes the reader want to figure out the mystery. On the last day of the hunt, Rainsford had set up one last trap to try and kill General Zarroff. Rainsford set up his knife to a rope, when someone would walk on it, it would swing down and kill the person in front. Little did Rainsford know Zarroff brought Ivan his assistant. “Rainsford climbed excitedly up a tree and looked back. His pursuit had stopped. But the knife had killed Ivan, not General Zaroff” (4). Rainsford was upset that his traps did not kill General Zarroff and instead killed the people and animals he brought along. Rainsford ran through the dogs and to the sea, General Zarroff followed him to the sea, but Rainsford wasn't in sight.
