I walked down the crowded high school halls, occasionally bumping into a student or two. I was too deep in thought to care enough to apologize for my clumsiness. My mind was focused on the YES! Magazine article, “I Can’t Breathe Until Everyone Can Breathe.” I found myself agreeing with Mr. Gerald Mitchell with the belief that, our decisions contribute to the moral problems in America, specifically when it came to the racial problems. But, at every turn, I found myself questioning if the decisions I make matter. How could they really affect any problems in America. I mean, me, a high school senior, couldn’t possibly do anything that could be influential. Then as I sat down at the tan desk for my free period, it hit me, I knew why the decisions I make matter. If we, the children of America, are truly the future, then ultimately we decide whether these problems will continue to exist. Therefore having a complacent mindset, such as the one I had, would cause these problems to reoccur. Mahatma Gandhi once said that,” Your beliefs become your thoughts. If I choose to spend my money at a store such as Walmart, which underpays its employees, then in my silence I would be just as guilty as those committing the crimes. I would be promoting bad business ethics and the degrading of Americans. Also, if I choose to spend my money in a store where diversity is weak, then I would be supporting a homogenous workplace. Now, I chose to be more decisive about where I chose to spend my money. Why? Because, as a consumer I affect how the company treat the employees that serves me. Therefore by spending my money at stores which treat its workers with respect and pays fairly, I would be indirectly treating individuals more fairly and
