Doing something that you might consider morally bad might be the only option for you. The text A Long Way Gone follows the author's life, and his experiences in the 1991-2002 Sierra Leonean war. Beah shows his claim by describing his journey through the Sierra Leonean war from an innocent child loving rap music and reggae to his time as a boy soldier killing with the army fighting against the rebels in the war, and finally to his recovery in a rehabilitation centre that allows him to regain a regular family and even talk about his experiences at a UN conference. This rehabilitation ends with the army attacking his city, his uncle is killed by sickness and loss of hope, and because of a fear instilled in him, he is forced to flee.
Besides appearing to be extremely frustrated by the problematic relationship he had with his wife, Adelaide, Souza also shows great frustration with the chaotic universe that surrounds him, marked by urban chaos, environmental deforestation and the coercion of citizens to resign themselves to an authoritarian government power. This situation of non-conformity with what happens around can also be verified with Bernard Marx, of "Brave New World".
Brave New World on Soma In todays society drug use is strongly discouraged, but in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World has shown otherwise. Aldous Huxley wrote what he thought was a new and better life then what we’re living now. The Brave New World is a society in which people are separated by social classes and everyone and everything is controlled. The people would use a drug called soma as another way to control the people.
Although, still a level 1 controlled substance, its uses as a medicine and as a recreational drug has lead to laws being passed relaxing restrictions upon its use and possession (DEA declines to loosen restrictions on medical marijuana, 2016, para. 1). Nearly half the states within the United States of America have some form of legalized marijuana and the case has been brought to the federal government a plethora of times. Even though it is legal in the majority states researchers cannot delve deeper into the effects of marijuana in the long term (DEA declines to loosen restrictions on medical marijuana, para. 4). Huxley (1932) wanted drugs to be openly used as long as it was used in the correct medium in a safe place. Huxley (1932) respected that people feel the need to release themselves from their society, and displayed this throughout his novel.
The Progressive Era was a timeframe when many individuals pushed for real changes. Some become successful while others weren't. A wide range of methodologies were utilized to attempt and change four areas. They were securing social welfare, upholding moral values, making financial change, and fostering efficiency.

Drugs and alcohol would have to be one of the biggest themes throughout the book. In nearly every chapter the characters are either taking drugs or talking about drugs. Nearly everyone in this society takes drugs, but there are the few who don’t.
Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World depicts a society where efficiency is the primary concern. The world leaders use horrifying repetitive conditioning to shape individuals into acquiescent, infantilized citizens, stupefied into an artificial sense of happiness. The majority of citizens willingly follow the tide that infinitely crashed over them with wave after wave of parties, casual sexual relations, and the perfectly engineered drug, soma. However, the readers may find themselves disturbed, and possibly intrigued, at the lack of morality in this “brave new world”.
I have chosen Into Thin Air for my project because the main theme of this novel is Danger and Morality. I feel as there’s danger and morality in my city and around the world, with the natural events occurring. Into Thin Air is a great work of literature because of Krakauer’s use of imagery and symbolism to describe the situation of the mountain. Also, the plot is exciting, and it leaves the reader in shock on each page. The writer tells it as it is.
In today’s society, relationships are the key components of a healthy community. Families with maternal and paternal figures not only have a positive connotation, but they are also highly regarded in the eyes of the general public. Although this is a social norm within modern times, the civilization within Brave New World has a vastly different perspective on relationships. Within this society, relationships are not only looked down upon but also seen as repulsive and vulgar. They believe that everyone belongs to everyone, and that everyone should have whoever they choose.
In spite of desperate efforts to keep everyone under control through deep conditioning and soma, there is always the one person, the one individual who simply can not fit in, the one person on whom this inhumanity cannot rub off on. Afflicted by the news of getting sent to Iceland Bernard is ironically being liberated, being set free from his captivity where “his punishment is really a reward”. He will get to meet people who, like him, were too much of an individual to settle for less than what they really knew they deserved.
