Mother Teresa started her mission in Calcutta. She helped the poor and sick who lived in the slums of Calcutta. She persuaded her peers to join her, even though there were not much necessities there that a person could live by. Mother Teresa spent most of her time praying and also teaching others prayers. She loved all people and treated everyone equally. Mother Teresa continued her mission for many, many years; never missing a day, to help the people. She would always nurse the sick, beg for food to give to the hungry and shelter the sick. Mother Teresa constantly reminded her sisters that God had disguised himself in the poor; when they took care of the poor, they touched the body of God. Hundreds of people came to assist Mother Teresa in her work. Those who were not able to, aided the poor in their own countries. In the early 1960’s, men and women, numbered up to three million. Help requests came from many places in the world, calling for Mother Teresa. In 1985, Mother Teresa went to New York and spoke; about her beliefs, her work, and how people should and could contribute more. With her speech, she managed to open up home, to care for those affected with HIV/AIDS. Mother Teresa was presented with many gifts, one, of which was the Pope’s white cadillac. She auctioned off the car, so she could build homes for the sick. As her work was fully recognised, she received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Mother Teresa used the cash part of the award to build a home for lepers. Above all her work, Mother Teresa had a painful heart condition; though she was burdened by this disease, and her growing age, she still continued her mission because it was personally given to her by Christ, and also because the world was with her. Mother Teresa died due to her health problems. She was beatified in October
