“Let’s go explore the woods!” suggests my best friend, Charlotte, as she points to the eerie woods behind my house. “No, let's do something else.” I responded. “Is the Penelope Marks afraid of the woods?!” “No! There are better things for us to be doing at this moment.” “Or maybe you're afraid of,” she looks around sarcastically, “Mothman!”
“That’s ridiculous.” Mothman is a mythical creature that supposedly lurks around the woods surrounding our town, Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Apparently there has been sightings of him starting back in the 60’s. Some people believe that the collapse of the Silver Bridge in 1967 was his doing. I open the sliding glass door and she scampers down to the lawn. I go into the bathroom and put up my long blonde hair into a ponytail. I hear Luna barking so I look out the window to see what she is barking at. She seems to be barking at something in the forest, but there is nothing there except the empty woods. I roll my eyes and walk out of the bathroom.
After making myself a snack, I go out on the deck to call Luna back inside. “Luna!” she doesn’t come right away as she usually does. “Luna!!” I call a bit louder but, she still doesn’t come. I walk down off the deck to look for her. It is starting to get dark out. I check my phone and it reads 5:34. Maybe she went in the woods, I stare at the dreary and expansive looking woods. I’ve never been more than five feet in them and I feel like a foolish 5 year old for being afraid of them.
I’ve been walking for about 5 minutes and there is still no sign of Luna. The wind whistling in my ear is the only thing I can hear, and every step is met with the crunching of red, orange, and yellow leaves. I continue to walk in search of Luna, calling out her name every now and then. I start to think that maybe she isn’t even in the
