There are some theories in achievement behaviour that we can use to explain her motivation such as needs achievement and achievement goal theory. I am going to use needs achievement theory to explain her achievement behaviour. For the personality part of need achievement theory, Sarah is motivated to achieve success in whatever she does .This can be seen in the passage which said that Sarah is a high achiever and a competitive person who focuses on success in whatever she does. This shows that she take pride and satisfaction from her achievements and is highly motivated to achieve success in whatever she does. For the situational part of need achievement theory, Sarah probability of success would be low as she did not take part in any marathon before. This can be seen in the passage above that “Recently Sarah decided to take part in a full marathon which is a first time for her”. Doing the training with a friend will make the session a more enjoyable and more positive environment to train in. For evaluation ,since it is a marathon , it requires a lot of running .Having an evaluation of Sarah’s progress such checking her timings for a certain distance rather than comparing the result with another person. This will also make Sarah’s outcome oriented lower as it is about improving yourself at a given task .Hence by creating a positive motivational climate for Sarah , this will make her less outcome oriented and more task oriented as she will focus on personal
