Motivation For Tris In The Book

When people make sacrifices for you so you can get farther and reach your goal, it can serve as motivation to help you get there. In the book, Divergent, by Veronica Roth, many people make sacrifices to help Beatrice Prior (also known as Tris) shut down a simulation at the end of the book, and this serves a great motivation for her to shut it down. These people make sacrifices for Tris to help her get closer to shutting down the simulation, but she cannot just stop and think about these sacrifices, she has to keep on going. Because of this, she feels obligated to shut down the simulation so their sacrifices were not in vain. But these sacrifices were not the only form of motivation Tris had throughout the book. Beatrice is motivated many times throughout the book because of wanting to become a member of Dauntless, wanting to save the lives of her family and other innocent people, and because of her parents’

To begin, Tris’s mom finds her when the Erudite are trying to drown her because she is Divergent. But then when they come back outside, Dauntless soldiers head toward them and her mother needs to do something about it. Veronica Roth mentions that Tris’s mother tells her where her family is and tells her to go to them and then distracts the Dauntless soldiers, but they end up shooting her in the abdomen (442-443). Her mother does this because she cares about saving the rest of her family and saving the rest of the people controlled by the simulation and their future victims. After this happened, Tris felt like she really needed to get to the simulation and shut it down since her mom had given her life so she could keep getting closer to the computer that controlled the simulation, and instead of spending a long time mourning her mother’s death, she just kept on going toward her goal and found her family, just like her mom wanted. Second, Tris’s father also sacrifices himself so she can get into the room with the computer controlling the simulation. Tris, her father and brother, and another abnegation member head to Dauntless headquarters. They find out where the computer is and Tris and her father head up to the floor where the computer is at.
