Ten Hills Farm: The Forgotten History of Slavery in the North emphasizes five generation slave owners during the colonial times in New England. Starting with John Winthrop, who later became the governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Truthfully, all humans have an unwavering desire to be accepted and in turn, choose to fit in. Throughout the short story, Nowlan criticizes societal norms through the use of conflict and symbolism; ultimately proving that conformity is destructive towards society.
