The Disney movie Inside Out, directed by Pete Docter and produced by Jonas Rivera, features a story about a young girl named Riley Anderson growing up in a new city. Riley’s actions are impacted by five diverse emotions that are played as characters in her head. The five emotes, Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Anger, and Fear, work together to balance out Riley’s personality in the real world in order to maintain her five core values: friendship, family, hockey, goofiness, and honesty. Creating characters from Riley’s emotions provides an exciting way to communicate to the audience the importance of every emotion equally. For example, Joy finally realizes near the end of the movie that Sadness is essential to Riley’s mind when she notices how Sadness helps Riley reconnect with her family and bring them close together again. Secondly, viewers are educated on how the mind cannot process information when the train of thought is interrupted. This is demonstrated in an amusing way by utilizing a physical train to represent Riley’s thought process. When the train of thought breaks down, this leaves Riley lost and confused, leading her to make the unethical decision of running away from home. Furthermore, this movie depicts how memories are stored and how they contribute to one’s personality. Riley’s long-term memories, which randomly pop into her head, are stored in an enormous room at the end of each day. This is demonstrated when the characters, who work in long-term storage, send a commercial jingle to Riley’s head every now and then that she sings along to; These long-term memories reflect her personality.
