Mozart Accomplishments

Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart was born on 27 January 1756 to Leopold Mozart (1719–1787) and Anna Maria (1720–1778) at 9 Getreidegasse in Salzburg. This was the capital of the Archbishopric of Salzburg or what is now Austria, then part of the Holy Roman Empire. His father Leopold was a German composer, conductor, teacher, and violinist. Nevertheless, his greatest achievement is being accredited for teaching his son and coaching him into becoming one of the greatest composers of all time as well as publishing a violin textbook (Versuch einer gründlichen Violinschule). Wolfgang was the youngest of seven children, five of whom died in infancy. His elder sister was Maria Anna Mozart (1751–1829), a prolific harpsichord player

However, the main goal of these tours were to reach a professional appointment for Wolfgang. It wasn’t until 1772 when Archduke Ferdinand contemplated hiring Mozart but never came to an agreement due to his mother Empress Maria Theresa’s reluctance to employ "useless people”. On March 13th 1773, Mozart was employed as a court musician by the ruler of Salzburg, Prince-Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo. The composer had a great number of friends and admirers in Salzburg and had the opportunity to work in many genres, including symphonies, sonatas, string quartets, masses, serenades, and a few minor operas. Between April and December 1775, Mozart developed violin concertos, producing a series of five (the only ones he ever wrote). However, ever since 1776 he devoted himself solemnly to piano concertos. Despite these artistic successes, Mozart grew increasingly discontent with Salzburg and looked to find a position elsewhere. One reason was his low salary, as well as his longing to compose operas, and Salzburg provided only rare occasions for these. The situation worsened in 1775 when the court theater was closed.
