Mr. Brown: Strength-Based Theory

I did not have a difficult time deciding on this case for Mr. Brown. There where many factors in this case study that needed attention. However, the most prominent issue was the lack of case management which resulted in Mr. Brown not getting his needs met. There were several factors that assisted in me in making this decision. The first one being Mr. Brown was not being treated with dignity, respect and self-worth and with self-determination. According to the National Association of Social Workers “ethical principles are based on social work's core values of service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. Brown would be solution-focused theory. The type of strength-based theory would allow Mr. Brown to focus on solutions rather than his problems. “Soultion-focused philosophy rest on the assumption that people can become mired in unresolved past conflicts and blocked when they focus on the past or present problems rather than on future solutions” (Corey, G. (2017). In this case Mr. Brown, is clearly capable of finding solutions to his problems. With the proper intervention Cecilia, and Mr. Brown can focus his strengths of being resilient to come up with future goals of finding housing, government assistance programs, and social support systems that would allow him to return to a normal state of …show more content…

It was to me that she was wearing two hats, and hard time distinguishing between her two roles. In addition, she was also conflicted between the organizations needs and her clients. In the nursing home environment most, older adult has different needs that are addressed in the context of health care. However, Mr. Brown had different needs that the staff had a hard time fulfilling because of him being homeless. Therefore, Cecilia had to adjust her method between her regular work duties, and her responsibilities of social work intern. One of the things that I learned from this case study was the value of competent social work. It was clear from the start that stigma was attached to Mr. Brown from the hospital staff because he was homeless and an alcoholic. Therefore, he was treated poorly and the staff attitudes about a individuals value and worth become non-existent. Cecilia, has a responsibility to Mr. Brown to educate the hospital staff on cultural competence. “Social workers should obtain education about and seek to understand the nature of social diversity and oppression with respect to race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, marital status, political belief, religion, immigration status, and mental or physical ability” (NASW, 2018).
