These themes are common in most of the stories and poems read during this semester. It has enabled me to realize the similarities in many of the books people read everyday and what lessons are learned. These lesson can go from simple to complex. The freedom for some ethnicities in some environments can be hard because they can be easily discriminated against because of their race or their color. The masks people wear are to hide their true feelings, so they become something that people will become more accepting of and not judge them.
While reading the 5 fiction short stories there became a common pattern between 3 stories and the characters in them. These stories are “The Rocking Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence, “I Stand Here Ironing” by Tillie Olsen, and “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”. Every character has the mindset to possibly fulfill their goals to better and/or change their lives. “The Rocking Horse Winner” is about a boy named Paul who wants to win his mother’s love and attention. Anthem by Ayn Rand follows the life of Equality 7-2512 and the struggle that he goes through living in a repressive society. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne follows the life of Hester Prynne and her daughter Pearl in a Puritanical community which has condemned them to live a life in isolation for Hester’s sin. The next examples deal with life’s obstacles represented by the struggle of living in a divided world, growing up, overcoming diversity, and creating a positive change. Liza is now telling Emma the story of her grandmother Rosa and her dreams with the Mammoths. In Rosa’s second dream they discuss how their plan is not working, and they need a new one. This for me was a lesson on overcoming obstacles and circumstances. When we have set a goal and our plan to achieve that goal does not work, we must accept the problem and focus on a different plan, but not give up on the goal.
Authors of short fiction always strive to communicate a message in their stories for the reader to discover. Their message makes their story memorable and it gives the reader something to take away. Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral” and Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” have very comparable messages concealed behind their stories. Although these two authors share their messages with vastly different stories, the protagonists in their stories convey similar messages for the reader to uncover. The authors of both “Cathedral” and “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” use the protagonist to communicate that maintaining a stubborn mindset is human nature and it takes a significant experience to change one’s way of thinking.

“Mrs. Flowers” by Maya Angelou and “A View from the Bridge” by Cherokee Paul Mcdonald are short stories that were read in the class. “Flowers” is a descriptive short story about how a young girl found healing with the help from an older yet wiser black woman. “A View” sets a tone for a man who found himself from being ignorant to becoming more aware and decent. Within the first story the characters find comfort within one another and develop a strong bond. Maya builds up her story with heavy background, the use of metaphors and longer paragraphs, which gives the reader a feel for the characters, and sets a connection of emotions.
