“Mrs. Flowers” by Maya Angelou and “A View from the Bridge” by Cherokee Paul Mcdonald are short stories that were read in the class. “Flowers” is a descriptive short story about how a young girl found healing with the help from an older yet wiser black woman. “A View” sets a tone for a man who found himself from being ignorant to becoming more aware and decent. Within the first story the characters find comfort within one another and develop a strong bond. Maya builds up her story with heavy background, the use of metaphors and longer paragraphs, which gives the reader a feel for the characters, and sets a connection of emotions. At the beginning of the story Marguerite compares herself to an old biscuit, “I sopped around the house, the store, the school, and the church, like an old biscuit.” The story gives a lot of background and has longer paragraphs which slowly leads into the forward action. The young girl is shown to speak perfect English when narrating the story and when providing slight dialogue. The author was very descriptive when it came to Mrs. Flowers' appearance which also added imagery to the description, from her skin to her smile and her clothes. She utilized the sense of smell and sight as Marguerite entered Mrs. Flowers’ home, detailing the smell from what she thought to the reality and the structure of the home and the refreshment that was offered. Mcdonald did not hold back on his use of description with his story, as the man went from describing the boy's appearance to perfectly detailing a fish to the young boy without hesitation. The author starts the story right into present tense, getting right to the forward action with no delay. He also relies heavily on the dialogue as there are a lot of on-going and rapid sentences as the boy rambles on each time he talks. There is tons of indentation with the story which results in not many paragraphs as most is made of dialogue and little narration. The imagery within the story is clear and precise as the reader can imagine every detail given. The writing is really choppy but it gave the reality of the dialogue between a young boy and an adult
