9. Style (a) Characterize the author’s diction. (specific word choices- formal or informal; simplistic or learned, emotional or objective, etc.) Most of the language in the book is reasonably informal. The children, during the time of the writing of the book, spoke very informally, especially boys like Huck and Tom who cared little of school. The narrator’s word choice is well learned, but the boys use simplistic language. At most points in the book, the language is objective. (b) Was the book easy to read or challenging? What did you like or dislike about the way the author writes? Surprisingly, I found this book tough to read. Characters (provide descriptions – physical and behavioral) Tom Sawyer- An adventurous, charismatic, young teen. He is constantly seeking thrill and excitement and does whatever he can to achieve it. He lives with his aunt as both of his parents are dead and finds many ways to get in trouble. Tom often doesn’t think all of his activities through, which can cause catastrophic issues. Huckleberry Finn- An orphaned boy of about Tom’s age. He too is also very adventurous and especially imaginative. Huck lives on his own as he has never met his parents. He seems like a great sidekick and companion for Tom as he goes through his frequent adventures. Becky Thatcher- A girl of Tom’s age who Tom immediately has a crush on. She is somewhat feisty, but also sensitive. At first, things with Tom don’t work, but after hefty efforts to win her over, she begins to like Tom back. Aunt Polly- Tom’s guardian. She punishes Tom often, but justifiably so. She legitimately loves Tom and wants his success, even if it doesn’t look like this on the outside.
