“Daddy is thinking of taking a loan from Mr. Roosevelt and his men…” from the poem “Debts” by Karen Hesse. During the Great Depression people suffered hard. Most people had to give up house payments, had fifteen or more jobs, and gave up on using necessities like toilet paper. In the Great Depression everyone was poor and were forced to give up most items in their household or find substitutions for the products. Theodore Roosevelt and the government were helpful to everyone in the Great Depression. The Civil Conservation Corps was a very successful program single, young men from ages seventeen to twenty-three. The government sent men to the nations’ forests work, live, and earn money. The tasks of the men were to build camps and reservoirs in the forests, dig ditches for the rain, and plant trees. The corporation hired over 3 million men and these men were paid thirty dollars a month. The Works Progress Administration was created by President Roosevelt. In Debts by Karen Hesse she has a quote that states, “Ma says,”Bay, hasn’t rained enough to grow wheat in Three years.”” Farmers were not able to grow wheat because the fields could not be turned over. Most farmers were taking loans from the government because they couldn’t afford anymore seed for the farms. Crops were spindling out and dying. After all the crops died farmers were losing money and could not lose anymore money. Parents were trying to make more money by selling their houses, cars, and disconnecting phones but most people never had phones. Most adults that were working lived without a dependable income. No one knew how much the pay was going to be. Companies were losing money just like everyone else in America. People in America were in a very dark time because of all of
