“Shells” by Cynthia Rylant is a realistic fiction short story about a boy named Michael who has to live with his Aunt Esther after his parents die. In the beginning, Michael is sad and grieves his parents. He has to live with his Aunt Esther because she was the only one who would take him. Soon, Michael buys a pet hermit crab to keep him company. His aunt tries to get closer to Michael by trying to have something in common with him.
According to the story Kindred by Octavia Butler during the antebellum South, the slaves were treated very badly such as being forced to work for the white people. According to the story of Camp 14 in the 60 Minutes video, the prisoners were treated harshly as well. But they were not like the slaves because they were prisoners and they only worked for the government (camp). The slaves and prisoners both tried to escape from where they were at.
In the historical fiction book, A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, the main character Salva is persistent throughout the entire story. When 11-year-old Salva, who is a member of the Dinka tribe, is forced out of his country by the fatal South Sudanese war, he is confronted with many life-threatening obstacles. Yet, he still finds a way to make headway and persevere. When grieving with the loss of his uncle, and leading a group of young men out of a refugee camp, Salva persevered. One way Salvator persevered, is when grieving with the loss of his uncle.
People in Southern Sudan have dirty water, wild animals, the many wars and a lot more hardships they need to face. In the book “A long walk to water” by: Linda Sue Park, is a book that takes place in Southern Sudan and features all the hardships Salva and Nya had to face while living there such as wild animals, wars, fights through tribes, lack of water and food. Hardships Salva faced in Southern Sudan are lack of water/ food, the wild animals, and the fighting/ war. One of the hardships Salva had to face in Southern Sudan is lack of water and food. In chapters 3-4 Salva had gotten water from a woman older than Salva’s mother that he had met after he was left alone, the woman gave Salva a gourd of water and a bag of raw peanuts.
In The Dancer by Vickie Sears a young girl, Clarissa, finds herself and her confidence through dance. This took time, devotion and passion. At first, Clarissa was young, a bit odd and very isolated, this is shown in line 61 “as quiet as she could be, she was”. It is a biography about Salva Dut, and a fictional girl named Nya, while Nya is walking for water twice a day for eight hours, Salva is running from the Sudanese Civil War.
In the book, “lovely,dark and deep,” by Amy Mcnamara, Wern Wells is hiding from her past. Wern survived a major car accident the killed her boyfriend, Patrick. After the accident Wern decided to live with her father in the upper east coast of Maine instead going to college as planned. She feel more in control at her father's house because of the quietness. That's until she meets Cal Owen.

Ida B by Katherine Hannigan is a creative, fun, and adventurous book. If you have a big imagination you will definitely be able to relate to Ida B, the main character in the book. Ida B, a young fourth-grade girl, loves to be outside in her backyard and talk to the trees and the brook.
Family and writing make up the identity of who people are in the world. In Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson, it follows poems that show moments throughout her life. She grew up during the time of the Civil Rights movement where black people protested for rights. Jacqueline finds her identity by showing her beliefs with writing and memories. Jaqueline’s family and her first efforts as a writer inspired her to identify her beliefs and wonders of the world with what she had learned throughout her life.
Anne Bradstreet’s poem “To My Dear and Loving Husband” was written between the years of 1641 and 1643. “Not until the year 1678, six years after Bradstreet’s death, the poem was published” (Ruby 228). A poet with Puritan beliefs, this poem uses the religious language, hyperbolic metaphors, paradox, and antiquated diction and style in order to explain the devotion and love for her husband as she struggles with the Puritan way of life along with the uncertainty of her reassurance of love. Reading this poem over and over for countless hours I came to the conclusion that there are two messages that Bradstreet was trying to project in this poem, the Literal way and the sarcastic way. The Literal way clearly shows the readers the love of a wife for her husband.
After reading the first few chapters of Doomed Queen Anne, I found it intriguing, suspenseful, and easy to relate to, making the story very entertaining to read. I was drawn into the book quickly, as I grew more attracted to all of the characters; Anne especially, because of her clever ways and interactions with the others around her. Anne Boleyn’s coy personality was expressed clearly and her thoughts and personal conflicts were revealed in a way that allowed me to understand her character immediately, both in and out. Her intense relationship, an external conflict with her sister and determination to better her was one of many events that attracted my attention to the story’s plot right away.
Summary: “The Flowers” by Alice Walker ‘The flowers’ is a story of losing innocence and a discovery of a lynched man lying dead in the bush by a girl, Myop. Myop, a little girl who cannot see beyond the beauty of her carefree childhood, is quite excited about the nature’s glory and she loves the world. Her golden surprise is referring to each innovation that she is finding along with the colors that flourish the landscape, from the flowers to create ready to be picked. Mayop continues her walk and collect pretty flowers sustaining her innocence state but when she picks the pink flowers, she steps into a human skull that is shattered along with her innocence. She literally examines the death face and as a respect gesture, she lays her flowers
