“Shells” by Cynthia Rylant is a realistic fiction short story about a boy named Michael who has to live with his Aunt Esther after his parents die. In the beginning, Michael is sad and grieves his parents. He has to live with his Aunt Esther because she was the only one who would take him. Soon, Michael buys a pet hermit crab to keep him company. His aunt tries to get closer to Michael by trying to have something in common with him.
According to the story Kindred by Octavia Butler during the antebellum South, the slaves were treated very badly such as being forced to work for the white people. According to the story of Camp 14 in the 60 Minutes video, the prisoners were treated harshly as well. But they were not like the slaves because they were prisoners and they only worked for the government (camp). The slaves and prisoners both tried to escape from where they were at.
In the historical fiction book, A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, the main character Salva is persistent throughout the entire story. When 11-year-old Salva, who is a member of the Dinka tribe, is forced out of his country by the fatal South Sudanese war, he is confronted with many life-threatening obstacles. Yet, he still finds a way to make headway and persevere. When grieving with the loss of his uncle, and leading a group of young men out of a refugee camp, Salva persevered. One way Salvator persevered, is when grieving with the loss of his uncle.

In the book “A long walk to water” by: Linda Sue Park, is a book that takes place in Southern Sudan and features all the hardships Salva and Nya had to face while living there such as wild animals, wars, fights through tribes, lack of water and food. Hardships Salva faced in Southern Sudan are lack of water/ food, the wild animals, and the fighting/ war. One of the hardships Salva had to face in Southern Sudan is lack of water and food. In chapters 3-4 Salva had gotten water from a woman older than Salva’s mother that he had met after he was left alone, the woman gave Salva a gourd of water and a bag of raw peanuts.

Before the Taliban took over Parvana’s town, it was a very beautiful city with restaurants, movie theaters, and shops.

Bettie Sellers’ poem “ In the Counselor’s Waiting Room” suggests that big changes in life can be very difficult to handle. This poem is about a girl who is waiting in the counselor's waiting room, and is nervous. She is nervous because she has a lot of stress from her family and herself about being a lesbian. Anne Bradstreet’s poem “To My Dear and Loving Husband” was written between the years of 1641 and 1643. “Not until the year 1678, six years after Bradstreet’s death, the poem was published” (Ruby 228). A poet with Puritan beliefs, this poem uses the religious language, hyperbolic metaphors, paradox, and antiquated diction and style in order to explain the devotion and love for her husband as she struggles with the Puritan way of life along with the uncertainty of her reassurance of love. Reading this poem over and over for countless hours I came to the conclusion that there are two messages that Bradstreet was trying to project in this poem, the Literal way and the sarcastic way. The Literal way clearly shows the readers the love of a wife for her husband.
Katherine Mansfield, born in New Zealand and attended Queen’s College at the age of nineteen, in her short story, “Miss Brill”, published in 1922, writes about a middle-aged women who experiences a dramatic moment at a park she frequently visits that defines her realty. The author supports her four main themes of: loneliness, youth, reality and delusion by describing moments of judgement, curiosity, imaginative, and optimistic from the protagonist, Miss Brill. Mansfield’s purpose is to illustrate the revelation to Miss Brill, destruction of her universal illusion, and to bring forth the “cupboard” symbol of her loneliness and shame into reality. She establishes a calm and formal tone for her audience, the readers of “Miss Brill”.
Summary: “The Flowers” by Alice Walker ‘The flowers’ is a story of losing innocence and a discovery of a lynched man lying dead in the bush by a girl, Myop. Myop, a little girl who cannot see beyond the beauty of her carefree childhood, is quite excited about the nature’s glory and she loves the world. Her golden surprise is referring to each innovation that she is finding along with the colors that flourish the landscape, from the flowers to create ready to be picked. Mayop continues her walk and collect pretty flowers sustaining her innocence state but when she picks the pink flowers, she steps into a human skull that is shattered along with her innocence. She literally examines the death face and as a respect gesture, she lays her flowers
