Short stories are written to share a lesson, or show and experience for the reader to relate to their own lives. Most stories show a challenge that someone has to overcome, such as a physical threat, or a mental confrontation that they have to face. In the story “Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myers, one of the two main characters, Lemon Brown, faced both types of challenges while having taught a message to the protagonist Greg Ridley. In the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Frederick Douglass tells a horrific but true story of his wife’s cousin being beaten to death. The slave was supposed to be watching the Hicks’ baby during the night, when she fell asleep. The baby started crying and the slave was slow to move, so Mrs. Hicks grabbed a stick and started hitting the slave with it. Mrs. Hicks broke the slave’s nose and breastbone, and managed to end the slave’s life. Frederick Douglass mentions so many other shocking stories in his autobiography.
Throughout life, people experience periods of mobility and immobility but the intensity depends on a person’s situation. As a college student, my mobility happens while traveling to school or between classes; however, my immobility happens a lot more because of having to sit in classes, the train or at home. Mentioning my experiences with movement served as a way to compare with Harriet Jones’s mobility in her book, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. While Jones’s mobility differs from mine in an extreme manner, it’s interesting to try to compare to see if I could ever understand her immobility as described in the book. Without much thought, it’s easy to understand that my train rides could never correlate to her torment spending seven years in a dark crawl space.

The elderly woman claims that spanking a child is for their own good while her daughter does not agree. The climax of the story is when the elderly women claims that she can't reach for her or bend down as she is old and fragile, so she pokes her granddaughter with a stick a couple of times to assist her. When the elder daughter and son in law arrive, her son in law grabs his daughter out and sees bruises that were caused by the poking of the stick by the elderly women. They soon come to realize after a short discussion that this was not the only time the elderly woman disciplined her granddaughter causing physical abuse, as a result of this they both decide it's time for her mother to leave the home. The protagonist in this story which is the elder lady doesn’t change at all.

In Edgar Lee Masters’ poem “Minerva Jones,” he writes about a young lady named Minerva. I learned that Minerva is a fat, cock-eyed girl who gets made fun of by people on the streets. The people she is speaking about are “Butch” Weldy, Doctor Meyers, and some villagers. Some villagers, which she refers to as Yahoos, don’t seem to take much liking to Minerva because of her appearance. She spoke about Butch like if he hurt her in some way by using phrases such as “Captured me after a brutal hunt.”

A central theme in the short story “Thank you Ma 'am” by Langston Hughes is a little kindness goes a long way. One act of kindness can change a person’s life forever. Her unnecessary kindness made a major impact on Roger and changes him. As the story progresses, we see that Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones shows empathy and kindness for Roger. That kindness appears to pass onto Roger near the end of the story.
