Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones was characterized in many different ways by Langston Hughes in "Thank you, Ma,am". First Mrs. Luella was very kind with Roger. She fed him although she didn't have much money. The nice woman gave him money for Roger's shoes that he was originally willing to steal for. She also made him wash his face. Second she is understanding. Mrs. Luella told roger that even she had done bad things she doesn't want to say. Last she is bossy. She shows this when she practically drags Roger down the street in a neck hold. She also tells him what to do. She says "When I'm through with you, sir you are going to remember Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones.". Mrs. Luella has showed us that kindness is very powerful and forgiveness
