In the beginning of the story, Roger did not really trust Mrs. Jones. He was afraid of her and he just wanted to leave. In the story it states, “...Are you hungry?” “No’m,” said the being dragged boy.
In the story Thank You M’am by Langston Hughes, Mrs.Jones treats Roger almost as if she were his mother, although he tried to steal her pocketbook. In paragraph 25 on page 53 the author writes, “‘Then, Roger, you go to that sink and wash your face,’ said the woman, whereupon she turned him loose-at last.” This quote supports the claim because a mother would care about how you looked if you were dirty. Therefore, Mrs.Jones would not have cared about how Roger looked if she wasn’t treating him motherly. Especially after he tried to steal her pocketbook.
Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones was characterized in many different ways by Langston Hughes in "Thank you, Ma,am". First Mrs. Luella was very kind with Roger. She fed him although she didn't have much money. The nice woman gave him money for Roger's shoes that he was originally willing to steal for. She also made him wash his face.
In the story 'Thank You Ma'am', Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones demonstrated the theme of helping others. In the text it shows this in the quote, "'You gonna take me to jail?'Asked the boy, bending over the sink. 'Not with that face, I would not take you nowhere,' said the woman. " This expresses the theme of helping others, because she could've taken him to jail but instead she took him in and cared for him. This theme is shown again when she fed him
Just what gave Mrs. Jones the courage to do the right thing? What gave Mrs. Jones the courage to do right thing in this situation was that she had done something like Roger has done, and wanted Roger to pass through it better than she did. Evidence to back this up would be, “I have done things too, which I will not tell you son-neither God, if he didn’t already know,” (Hughes 35). This evidence explains that Mrs.Jones and everyone else had done something bad in their lives, and Mrs. Jones wants Roger to pass through it better than she did, and to encourage other people to do the right thing in bad situations during your or anyone else
After talking to my group about the book Thank You Ma’am by: Langston Hughes, we realized that Mrs. Jones is very helpful. We think Mrs.jones is giving and teaches him good life lesson that are helpful in life. The first reason why I think Mrs. jones is helpful is because she is giving. As proof, when she brought him to her house she realizes he was dirty. So she let him wash his face in her sink

The story is about a boy named Roger who tries to steal Mrs. Jones purse, she takes him to her house and takes care of him. Roger could be described as lonely because he has nobody home at his home, he is very respectful of Mrs. Jones, and he tries to steal.

In the two short stories, “A Retrieved Reformation” by O’ Henry and “Thank You Ma’am” by Langston Hughes, the themes of redemption and second chances are showed through the main conflicts in the stories. The authors incorporated the two themes by using descriptive words and specific details. “A Retrieved Reformation” and “Thank You Ma’am” have similarities and differences such as shared themes of second chances and redemption, the presentation and delivery of the two themes, and the path the main character takes to becoming a better person.
Mrs. Jones, “...simply turned around and kicked…,” the boy. She also forcefully had the boy, “... pick up my pocketbook, boy and give it here…” In addition to that, the woman was very threatening. For example, Mrs. Jones, told the boy that he would remember her once she was “through with,” him. These parts are significant because it portrays a big part of Mrs. Jones’ personality.
In Thank You Ma 'am” by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones showed the golden Rule by bringing Rodger into her home. She showed much hospitality towards him, even though he tried to do something horrible to her. Mrs. Jones could have done something cruel to Roger, but instead she was kind to him. She taught him a valuable life lesson, although she was not mean about it. Following the golden rule in life is very important for everyone, you should always follow this rule, no matter what.
A central theme in the short story “Thank you Ma 'am” by Langston Hughes is a little kindness goes a long way. One act of kindness can change a person’s life forever. Her unnecessary kindness made a major impact on Roger and changes him. As the story progresses, we see that Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones shows empathy and kindness for Roger. That kindness appears to pass onto Roger near the end of the story.
It is also, by forgiving Roger, that Mrs. Jones helps him open his eyes to the idea of choice. The combination of her sternness and compassion affects Roger tremendously.
