Hi Jasmine. Thank you for sharing your life and your son with the class. I am a mother as well and us mothers will go to the end of the earth for our children. Reading your post made me grateful, that I have excess to multiple providers because I live is a big city. Not having adequate health providers in rural areas needs to change.
I agree with your post Brian. Foss delivered his speech confidently with facts you can't ignore. Usually when someone commits a crime it's easy to label them as "a delinquent" or a bad person in general. What people tend to overlook however, is the reasoning behind those actions. I really appreciate that Foss as a prosecutor, is someone who is adamant about changing lives for individuals before they suffer to the hands of a system that needs help itself.
He remembers people coming into their house and crowding around their television to watch it with them for the first time. In today’s society, there is so much technology and we have gotten so used to it we do not think for ourselves. Mr. Francis explained to me that since there was no technology or cell phones, people actually communicated with each other and had real conversations. He told me that today’s generation relies on our phones and social media so much we forget how to communicate in the outside world, and we talk to people like we talk to them online.
Into the Electronic Millennium by Sven Birkerts, written in 1991, is an informative essay that goes into depth about how society is becoming dependent on electronics as a way of communication. New generations will encounter drastic changes as a result of the switch from printed words to electronic media. Birkerts’ intent is to inform his audience about the dangers that electronics will bring to future generations. He thinks that seeking information through printed words are becoming a rarity for younger people. He also claims that since people are dependent on electronics now, people do not have a mind of their own.
In “This I Believe” (1952), Jackie Robinson claims that free society allows change for the better among people. Robinson elaborates by stating that when people in a free society are allowed “room to breathe and time to think” that the failings of the civilization will “disappear”, though Robinson recognizes that without being willing to “fight for it” people as a whole will not surpass these shortcomings. He writes in order to motivate people to “find the greatness of tomorrow” by impressing upon people the importance of working towards a perfect society. Have you ever wonder how does a crime scene investigator, known as a CSI, discover blood spatter on different fabrics, which is not visible to the human eye? The key is bluestar. According to the article “Influence of Bluestar Reagent on Blood Spatter Stain of Different Fabrics” by Arnon Grafit, bluestar is a “luminol-based reagent that is applied by spraying on surface.” Not only that, but “it helps obtain DNA and to analyze spatters patterns. By analyzing the article the reader is able to understand how bluestar works through the rhetorical techniques used.
I thought that the article, “The Devils Bait” by Leslie Jamison, was a very interesting story about the controversy of Morgellon’s disease. I had never heard of this disease prior to reading this article, so I was very interested in what it was about. I was very surprised to find out that this disease was originated in the 2000’s and that I had never heard of it before. I also find it surprising that an entire conference was held at a church in Austin, Texas for those who claimed to be suffering from this disease. It was very interesting to hear the stories from those who had the illness, especially Sandra who shows the video of her in the bathtub and what appears to be larva coming out of her skin.
Too much screen use induces less communication between people and more time spent using technology. Technology used in our society in the same way. Sometimes people use television to forget about a hard time at work, others using phones in public, so they don’t have to interact with other people. “Little by little, technology has become an integral part of the way that people communicate with one another and has increasingly taken the place of face-to-face communication. Due to the rapid expansion of technology, many individuals fear that people may be too immersed in this digital world and not present enough in the real world,”.
The poem “One Boy Told Me” by Naomi Shihab Nye, was told by her son when he was two and three years of age. His comments, thoughts, and remarks were jotted down verbatim by Naomi and pieced together to create the one of a kind free verse poem. Nye assembled the phrases into individual stanza’s where they coherently flow to one another to illustrate the mind of a toddler. Wide ranges of emotions and personalities invoke the inner child and their curiosity. Overall, her son’s interpretations of his surroundings and understandings are represented in how the idioms expressed set the stage for intrusiveness, humor, and poetic devices to contribute to the overall meaning.
Our identity is a place upon many attributes of a human being. Whether the person is someone who goes on promoting themselves to the world or not, and it shows how people communicate to others around them. Language is one of the main components that unveils the person’s identity in their everyday life, and they are many different ways to approach a person’s language. Relating to the article of Yiyun Li, “To Speak is to Blunder,” she knows two languages that has its positive and negative outcomes in her life. I to relate to her understanding of language, but a different view of what language means to me.
By definition, computer-mediated communication (CMC) is communication about or by means of computer technology (Thurlow, Lengel, & Tomic, 2004). The transition of computers from highly specialized technology to personal possessions contributed to the increase in investigations relating to CMC (Thurlow, Lengel, & Tomic, 2004). The study of CMC has been widely applied, allowing for discussions of all forms of human communication via the means of a computer. Some of those disciplines through which CMC has been studied include psychology (Gackenbach & Ellerman, 1998; Kiesler, Siegel, & McGuire, 1984), politics (Dahlberg, 2001; Hacker & van Dijk, 2000), and education (Berge & Collins, 1995; McComb, 1994). On the 27th of October in 1964, Ronald Reagan gave a speech called “A Time for Choosing” on behalf of Barry Goldwater. His speech was so popular that it is also known as “The Speech”. Afterwards, Ronald Reagan ,also known as The Great Communicator, was thought of by many people as a great political speaker. This speech was given to endorse the Goldwater campaign, even though Goldwater lost the election. The Speech launched Reagan’s political career into action and he later went on to be the Californian governor and President of the United States.
Ancient forms of human communication include cave drawings, smoke signals, symbols, and carrier pigeons. During the late 1800’s, communication became more advanced with the invention of the typewriter and the telephone. Roughly one hundred years later, a military project resulted in what we know today as the internet. With a little innovation, the internet made social interactions between people easier than ever, although, the convenience may come at a cost. Some theories suggest that heavy reliance on social media for human interaction will weaken communication skills, hinder meaningful social interactions, and negatively impact personal relationships.
The world we live in today is predominately changing with the advancement of digital communication in the daily aspects of our life. The rapid growth and evolution of digital communication, has resulted in it now becoming the backbone of the way we interact with other people. Beginning from simple 160-character SMS messages to text’s influence on the internet including Facebook, Twitter, Blogs and Instagram and then introduced on our mobile phones with BBM and whatsapp; digital communication has become a part of our spoken discourse. Digital communication in every aspect has impacted our lives as it helps jobs and businesses communicate a lot faster through e-mail, multimedia and texting.
