Beatrice and Benedick go from almost hating each other, to being enamored with the other. There are many instances when Beatrice shows her love for Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing. The first occurrence of interaction between Beatrice and Benedick is in the first scene of the first act. Beatrice mentions that she “know[s] [Benedick] of old” (1.1.142-143). This phrase is saying that Beatrice has known Benedick for a while and predicted his actions correctly. Beatrice’s paying attention to Benedick demonstrates her love for him because she remembers little things about Benedick. In this scene, Beatrice “rather hear [her] dog bark at a crow than a man swear he loves [her]” (1.1.129-130); this saying reveals the irony of Benedick swearing his love for her. Beatrice also mentions to Benedick that “[she] [is] of [his] humor for that” (1.1.128-129) which translates to Beatrice agreeing with Benedick about loving no one. This conversation shows the irony of Beatrice and Benedick’s almost love-hate relationship. At the masquerade party, Beatrice talks about Benedick behind his back not knowing she is actually talking to Benedick
