In William Shakespeare’s play, Much Ado About Nothing, is a comedy play for entertaining the audience and to bring comedy for entertainment, one must be funny. Beatrice is a woman who is outspoken, witty, gullible, and a prideful character in the play. In the play, Beatrice is very amusing, and so are the others but she is unique. If, the character did not have these characteristics, the story of the play would not be entertaining. In the play, Beatrice and Benedick always engage in a witty conversation that would bring laughter to the audience. Although she has a strong character, she manages to change a little at the end of the play. Beatrice is an outspoken woman in the play. Beatrice’s …show more content…

She also states that she could not tolerate being with a man who has a beard and would rather sleep in a woollen. Beatrice’s uncle, suggests that she can find a man that has no beard, but she responds a man with or without a beard is not good enough for her no matter if he is young or old. Since Beatrice has witty words, Benedick also decides to be the same but in a sarcastic tone he answers her by saying he is surprised that she is not dead from hearing him. Another example of Beatrice making a remark toward Benedick is when she says, “I/ had rather hear my dog bark at a crow than a man/ swear he loves me.” (1.1.117-19), referring to she rather not fall in love with a man who swears that he is true to her. One suggestion that Beatrice is only making funny remarks towards Benedick is when “her first words ask for news of him, and though her questions take the form of banter, she evidently finds pleasure in hearing the messenger’s commendation of Benedick’s courage and is eager to know of his doings”(Shakespeare and Margerison 23), which is why she gives him somewhat of a hard time to speak to her. Shakespeare made these two couples to have a witty personality to create a romantic comedy play that would bring laughter to the
