A career in medicine is the perfect opportunity to stimulate my mind in a highly fascinating and ever evolving field. I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to be able to combine the caring aspect of healthcare with the scientific aspects of the subject, and at the same time being able to have a tremendous impact on the lives of many people.
One of my sporting idols, Muhammad Ali, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1984 at the age of 42. He is one of the most high-profile people battling the condition. This particular case is what sparked my interest in medicine, as I was curious to know how this condition caused one of the greatest athletes of all time to deteriorate so severely. The staff at the Surgery worked together in a multidisciplinary team in order to provide a good standard of healthcare for the public. The multidisciplinary team consists of the doctors, the nurses, the managers, all the counterparts that have specialised roles regarding the patient care, which all interlink and are dependent on each other.
As I spent time in the Surgery, I gained valuable insight into the roles of GP’s within the NHS, as I was able to witness consultations with patients. It also helped me to appreciate the stress all medical professionals face on a daily basis. Moreover, I saw the rewards of being able to have such a significant impact on patients' lives
I had the opportunity to partake work experience at Solihull hospital, where I spent time shadowing consultants. I saw how the patients physical appearances improved with time and how revitalised they looked after a treatment; I felt a sense of joy witnessing the patients go home and re-join their family and continue with their life. This has strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in medicine, and one day put medical knowledge that I will gain during University to practical use. Moreover, I was taught how to take medical histories from patients; I was surprised by the vast range of ailments that I came across, from Pulmonary Oedema to Renal Failure and even Cancer.
